I’m about to defend Carrie Prejean

Yes that Carrie Prejean. I am not defending the comments she made at the 2008 Miss USA pageant; I support full equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people and I hate when people try to push their personal beliefs on others. I am also not defending her firing as Miss California; she knew the rules of the pageant and chose not to follow them.

Apparently back in 2007 Ms. Prejean had a 4 day vacation with a man, after which time she self-recorded several videos herself masturbating, videos that she made only for this man. The man in question recently released these videos to the Miss California officials. Vivid, a company that produces and distributes pornographic films, also has these videos and is asking Ms. Prejean’s permission to release them commercially.

I feel really bad for Ms. Prejean.

Now, I understand the glee of some people who are happy to cry ‘hypocrite’ at her. After all, a passage in her new book says, “God gave us our bodies, and it’s perfectly right that we use them in ways where we can give glory to God by making our bodies, our temples of the Holy Spirit, strong and fast.” I’m pretty sure that doesn’t include masturbating while someone films. But that’s not the point.

This woman has been violated. The video was private and this douchenozzle ex-boyfriend of hers released it to the public. I would be inclined to liken this to a rape or sexual assault, where an act is performed without the consent of the person involved. These videos was made for his private viewing pleasure, not for the whole world to see. When this pathetic excuse for a man released the videos he violated her. As much as I am against everything this she stands for, I can’t take pleasure in that.

Some of the Christian people who were supporting Ms. Prejean, namely the National Organization for Marriage, are distancing themselves from her. I don’t know if they are more upset with the idea that she masturbates or that she did it in front of a camera. People have tried to shame her about these videos and for masturbating, along with the other racy pictures and the breast implants. She is being shamed for being a sexual human being. This is something she has in common with gays and lesbians: being shamed for one’s sexuality. I hope the irony isn’t lost on her.
